Camellia sasanqua
Hiroshima District Lumber Control Corporation
August 1967
These Camellia sasanqua sasanqua camellia trees were planted to enhance the memorial landscape surrounding the Monument of the Hiroshima District Lumber Control Corporation, which was constructed in prayer for the souls of those who died at their posts and for everlasting world peace.
The epitaph on the back on the monument reads:
“During WWII, the Hiroshima District Lumber Control Corporation headquarters, one of Japan’s lumber control organizations, was located in this building with a staff of 260 employees. At 8:15 on August 6, 1945, an atomic bomb exploded in the sky directly above, and over one hundred managers and employees lost their lives as they went about their work inside and outside the dome. When the decision was made to preserve these ruins, surviving employees gathered at the suggestion of then-president Tanaka Koichi and constructed this monument to pray for the repose of the souls of their co-workers and for lasting world peace. This monument is also dedicated to the employees of the Japan Lumber Corporation Hiroshima Branch and the Hiroshima Shipping Lumber Corporation who lost their lives.
