Reason for Donation
Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Japan Choi Sang-yong and his wife planted this Lagerstroemia indica crape myrtle tree next to the Monument in Memory of the Korean Victims of the A-bomb when they visited Peace Memorial Park. This commemorative act was imbued with their wishes for world peace and for friendship between the Korean and Japanese people.
The Monument in Memory of the Korean Victims of the A-bomb was originally constructed on April 10, 1970 on the river bank at the west end of Honkawa Bridge by the Hiroshima Local Main Office of the Korean Residents Union in Japan. In the years that followed, many questioned if the monument’s location outside Peace Memorial Park constituted ethnic discrimination. In response to this, the mayor of Hiroshima announced in December 1998 plans to approve the relocation of the monument to within park grounds. The Committee to Move the Monument in Memory of the Korean Victims of the A-bomb started work in May 1999, and a ceremony was held on July 21 of the same year to celebrate the relocation.
A memorial service is held in front of the monument every year on August 5.
