Reason for Donation

Representatives from the Italian Olive City Association, a group comprised of 55 municipalities across Italy, visited Hiroshima on November 9, 1995, as part of PR efforts and to increase the spread of Olea europaea olive trees. Carlo Antoni, Mayor of the City of Trevi and President of the Italian Olive City Association, gifted the City of Hiroshima three olive tree seedlings, stating “Let us work together in the name of peace”.

The olive tree is widely regarded as a symbol of peace and it is used on the flag of the United Nations (est. 1947).
