Reason for Donation
The olive tree is widely regarded as a symbol of peace and harmony, and it is featured in the design of the United Nations flag (adopted in 1947).
On November 9, 1995, representatives of the Italian Olive Oil Towns Association—an organization comprising 55 municipalities in Italy at the time—visited Hiroshima to promote olive cultivation and raise public awareness. During the visit, Mr. Carlo Antonini, Mayor of Trevi and president of the association at the time, gifted three olive saplings to the City of Hiroshima, expressing his wish to “work together in the name of peace.”
On November 11, 2025, Mr. Michele Sonnessa, the current president of the association (which has grown to include more than 500 member municipalities as of 2025), visited Hiroshima and gifted another olive sapling to the city in light of the current international situation. Together with Mayor Matsui, the sapling was planted as part of the initiatives commemorating the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing.
