Reason for Donation
In May 1969, the Mayor of Hiroshima reached out to the British Consul-General in Osaka-Kobe with a request for donations of roses, the English national flower. Thanks to the efforts of Consul-General Robert M. John after he returned to the Uk, the City of Hiroshima was gifted roses in March 1970.
The City received ten of each of the following varieties: Piccadilly, Copper Pot, Wendy Cussons, King's Ransom, Ernest H. Morse, Blue Moon, Peace, Queen Elizabeth, Diorama, and Birmingham Post, for a total of 100.
The Mayor of Hiroshima and the British Consul-General ceremoniously broke-ground during a presentation ceremony held on May 16, 1970. During the ceremony, the British Consul-General in Osaka-Kobe stated: "It brings me great joy to present England's national flower and emblem of peace, the rose, to Hiroshima as a part of this goodwill envoy to your city on the 25th anniversary of the bombing."
