This tree, grafted from an atomic bombed Prunus × yedoensis cherry tree located on the grounds of Hiroshima City Hall, is known as hibaku cherry tree.

This cherry tree was planted by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Muta Maathai and Hiroshima city high school students during her visit on February 12, 2010 as part of planting projects to make Peace Memorial Park lush with trees and plant life befitting a sanctuary of peace, as well as to mark the 120th anniversary of the establishment of Hiroshima municipal administration. The Kenyan environmentalist is credited with popularizing the Japanese idea of mottainai across the world.
