Cedrus deodara
Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister of India
October 9, 1957
This Cedrus deodara Himalayan cedar tree was planted to commemorate Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s visit to Hiroshima.
Prime Minister Nehru was the very first foreign head of state to visit Hiroshima. The Indian Prime Minister addressed the crowd of 30,000 citizens who gathered to welcome him saying: “You have to seek some other kind of answer, and the world today has to choose between the two paths, the path of ever-greater violence symbolized by the nuclear bombs or the path of peace and compassion symbolized by the message of the Buddha.”
