Pinus thunbergii
Hiroshima Citizen
March 28, 1958
When construction of Peace Boulevard started, the City of Hiroshima was facing financial constraints that prevented them from planting many trees. However, the City reached out to towns and cities across Hiroshima Prefecture, requesting donations of trees as part of the Tree Provision Campaign. Thereupon, in 1957 and 1958, organizations and individuals across the prefecture responded generously and trees were planted along Peace Boulevard, as well as in parks and along streets across the city. The City received this Pinus thunbergii black pine as part of the call for donations, and it was moved to Peace Memorial Park from the west side of the former Shinjo Bridge by horse-drawn carriage.
This is the only tree remaining in Peace Memorial Park planted as part of the Tree Provision Campaign.
