Prunus × yedoensis
The 5th Class of Graduates from the Hiroshima Municipal Commercial High School
April 4-5, 1956
To mark 25 years since graduating, the 5th class of graduates from the Hiroshima Municipal Commercial High School spent April 5 and 6, 1956, planting 150 Prunus x yedoensis cherry tree saplings in Peace Memorial Park and along the embankment next to Heiwa-ohashi Bridge. They were motivated to plant these cherry trees to comfort the souls of the atomic bomb victims and to contribute to park grounds.
In 1944, the Hiroshima Municipal Commercial High School (established in 1921) was forced to reform into the Municipal Shipbuilding Industry School under national policy. All of the students and staff members who had been mobilized to undertake building demolition in the city center died in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, given their proximity to the hypocenter. This is inscribed on a monument which stands by the river west of the International Conference Center Hiroshima.
