Friedenspark Hiroshima
The City of Eltville, Germany
January 1999
Eltville, a charming town situated on the River Rhine in mid-west Germany, is one of the country's many Rose Towns. Tomin Harada, chair of the Japan Rose Society Chugoku Branch and Honorary Citizen of Hiroshima, headed a couple of delegations to Eltville; a testament to the longstanding close friendship the Japan Rose Society Chugoku Branch and the Hiroshima Rose Society had with the German Rose Society. Hiroshima also welcomed numerous visits by the City of Eltville's official in charge of parks and members of the Germany Rose Society who organized citizen exchange events based around roses.
Chair Harada, who longed to bring about world peace through roses, donated numerous "Hiroshima" roses (Hiroshima's Children, Peace Marker, Senba-tsuru, Hiroshima Appeal, etc) that had been cultivated by Hiroshima horticulturist Kazukura Tagashira to Eltville. They were ceremoniously planted in June 1998 in the Mainz Castle Rose Garden.
In January the following year, Mayor Hoffman of Eltville sent 46 Friendenspark Hiroshima rose saplings to Chair Harada to deliver to the Mayor of Hiroshima on his behalf. The Friendenspark Hiroshima was awarded a gold medal by the German Rosen-Union in 1997. It was decided that 16 of the saplings would be given to members of the Rose Society, and the remaining 30 saplings would be looked after by the City of Hiroshima. These 30 saplings were nurtured at the Hiroshima Botanical Garden, and 24 of them were planted in Peace Memorial Park in 2000.
