These cherry trees were planted by the Peace Memorial Park Tree Planting Iki-iki Volunteers to mark the 120th anniversary of the establishment of Hiroshima municipal administration and to make Peace Memorial Park lush with trees and plant life befitting a sanctuary of peace.
The Prunus x yedoensis cherry trees were grafted from trees that were exposed to the atomic bomb on the grounds of Hiroshima City Hall.
Details of the 120 cherry trees planted for the Commemorative Project:
- 100 Prunus x yedoensis (atomic bombed cherry trees) throughout Peace Memorial Park
- 5 Prunus x speciosa along the left bank of the Honkawa River between Aioi Bridge and Honkawa Bridge
- 5 Prunus x subhirtella along the left bank of the Honkawa River between Honkawa Bridge and Nishi Heiwa-Ohashi Bridge
- 5 Prunus pendula Maxim. var. ascendens Makino along the right bank of the Motoyasu River between Motoyasu Bridge and Heiwa-Ohashi Bridge
- 5 Cerasus jamasakura to the east and the west of the Pond of Peace
