Botanical Name

Prunus × yedoensis

Tree Donor

The Hiroshima Restoration Exposition

Date Donated

January 1959

Reason for Donation

Although difficult to determine the exact trees, the thick-trunked Prunus x yedoensis cherry trees in the north of Peace Memorial Park were planted to commemorate the Hiroshima Restoration Exhibition held in 1958. One hundred trees were planted at the time (the Cerasus jamasakura to the east and west of the Pond of Peace, and the Yae-zakura and thin-trunked Prunus x yedoensis cherry trees that line the Motoyasu River are not the cherry trees which were planted at this time).

The Hiroshima Restoration Exhibition was held in 1958 to mark the progress of reconstruction of the city and the restoration of population numbers to the highest pre-war levels. The exhibition, which was held from April 1 until May 20 in Peace Memorial Park, along Peace Boulevard, and at Hiroshima Castle, saw the construction of 30 exhibition halls and the restoration of Hiroshima Castle Tower, which had been lost in the bombing.  A cumulative total of more than 900,000 people visited the exhibition.
