Tree Donor

Commemorative Tree Planting for Land Construction Week

Date Donated

July 10, 1968

Reason for Donation

In 1945, the Chugoku-Shikoku Public Works Office (part of the Ministry of Home Affairs, predecessor of the Ministry of Construction) occupied the entirety of the 3rd floor and parts of the 1st floor of the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall (currently the Atomic Bomb Dome). On August 6, 1945, 52 of the branch’s 93 employees died at their posts when the atomic bomb was dropped.

These Cycas revoluta sago palm trees were planted on July 10, 1968, as part of commemorative events to mark the 20th National Land Construction Week.* The Ministry of Construction's Chugoku Regional Construction Bureau (presently the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Chugoku Regional Development Bureau) planted these trees next to the Monument to Those Who Died From the Chugoku-Shikoku Public Works Office which sits on the northern side of the Atomic Bomb Dome. They hoped to further console those who lost their lives and to improve the view around the monument by planting these trees.

*On July 10, 1948, the Construction Board became the Ministry of Construction. To celebrate this raise in status, July 10 was designated as Land Construction Memorial Day. Every year from 1949 until 2000, National Land Construction Week was held between July 10 and July 16. The week featured publicity events and other commemorative activities to garner support and promote understanding amongst the public for the implementation of land construction projects that benefit the safety and comfort of the people.
