August 6, 1947
Reason for Donation
Hiroshima's first Peace Festival was held on August 6, 1947, two years after the bombing. It was organized by the Hiroshima Peace Festival Committee, which had been proposed by the City of Hiroshima, the Hiroshima Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Hiroshima Tourism Association.
During the Peace Festival, the very first Peace Declaration was delivered by then-Mayor Shinso Hamai, and the Hiroshima City Council Chairperson Yutaka Terada planted a camphor tree, which had been chosen as Hiroshima's Tree of Peace, in the Peace Square located on the east side of the northern most point of Peace Memorial Park on the bank of Motoyasu River.
The commemorative camphor tree was subsequently moved to its current location following park construction works.
