Atomic Bomb Dome Preservation Project 3.
The Atomic Bomb Preservation Project 3. was carried out in Fy2002 to minimize deterioration of the Atomic Dome with the passage of time, and to preserve it in its current appearance. Work was limited to areas and materials used during previous preservation projects, and as a general rule, no work was done to the original elements of the Atomic Bomb Dome.
Rainwater Damage Prevention
Preserving Wall Tops and Window Sills
Wall tops and window sills were covered in a sheet of lead to prevent rainwater penetrating into the walls of the Atomic Bomb Dome. However, given the ease with which features on the ground floor can be maintained, they were sprayed and waterproofed with a permeable water absorption inhibitor.
Preserving Interior Walls
To preserve the various damages and marks caused by the atomic bombing that remain on the lower interior walls beneath the domed roof from rainwater damage, we installed eaves made of polycarbonate plating using existing steel frames from previous preservation work.
Preserving the Roof of the Former Storehouse
To ensure waterproofing of the former storehouse roof, we installed a sloping sheet of stainless steel waterproof roofing.
Preserving the Former Storehouse
We added concrete blocks to a foundation to make it taller in order to prevent rainwater flowing into the interior of the former storehouse from its surroundings. In addition, to eliminate damp/moisture, we installed a fan to aid airflow.
Preserving the Basement
To prevent rainwater, gravel, and other sediment flowing/falling into the basement from its surroundings, we built a wall from concrete blocks.
Preserving Steel Materials
To differentiate between the reinforcing steel and the original steel (steel that can be dated back to the time of the bombing), we painted the reinforcing steel a different color.
Preserving Ceiling Slabs on the Former Storehouse
To prevent the plaster on the ceiling of the former storehouse from flaking, we installed sheets of steel on top of a scaffolding frame to catch the plaster flakes. Moreover, special anti-flaking repair work was carried out where detaching plaster had become so pronounced that repair work was deemed urgent.
