The Atomic Bomb Dome has remained in the condition it was left in after the bombing. There have been no significant structural changes, but as the Dome continued to deteriorate due to wind and rain, the structure was faced with the possibility of collapse. This led to a preservation project conducted in FY1967 to preserve the Dome as it was after the bombing. Four additional preservation projects have been conducted since.

Fundraising campaigns were conducted to raise the construction fees for both projects, gathering a large amount in donations. The remainder of the funds were reserved in the Atomic Bomb Preservation Project Fund and used for the third, fourth, and fifth preservation projects and preservation surveys.

Below is a summary of past construction work.
