The Atomic Bombing
On August 6, 1945, the explosion of a single atomic bomb over Hiroshima instantly leveled the city, destroying the buildings in the urban areas. The Industrial Promotion Hall was exposed to the explosion at an incredible proximity – approximately 160 meters northwest of the hypocenter. Although the building itself was demolished by the blast and heat rays and burnt completely with fire bursting from the ceiling, as the blast struck from almost directly above, the building’s central part miraculously withstood the impact.
Everyone working in the building at the time perished instantly, including the personnel of Chugoku-Shikoku Public Works Office, the Hiroshima District Lumber Control Corporation, Japan Lumber Corporation Hiroshima Branch and Hiroshima Shipping Timber Co.
