The Peace Memorial Ceremony has been held every year since the construction of the Cenotaph for the A-Bomb Victims in Peace Memorial Park in 1952 to console the souls of those lost to the atomic bombing, as well as pray for the realization of lasting world peace. In light of the lift of various COVID-19 restrictions and a gradual return to normal socioeconomic activity, the 2022 Peace Memorial Ceremony will be held on a larger scale than 2021 while continuing to strictly adhere to COVID-19 infection prevention measures (details below).

Ceremony scale

  • Approximately 3,550 seats will be available. Chairs will be placed one meter apart as a rule to ensure social distance and guests will be asked to wear masks all the time, including when seated.
  • In light of the increased risk of heat stroke due wearing masks for our elderly guests, particularly representatives of bereaved families across Japan, as well as hibakusha and bereaved families of hibakusha, in accordance with the policies of the Ministry of Labor, Health, and Welfare and the Ministry of the Environment, we will be placing chairs two meters apart (just as we did in 2021) and will not be requiring the elderly to wear masks while seated.

Participants

  • Please see (1) for a list of primary invited guests. We currently do not have concrete numbers available as we will be adjusting the number of those invited at a later date.
  • In addition to increasing the number of seats for hibakusha and bereaved families of hibakusha, we will also have seats for the general public, local government, as well as international residents (seats which were not available in 2021). However, as stated in (2), we will be requiring applications for these seats in advance.

Ceremony schedule

  • The ceremony is scheduled to proceed as it does each year, starting at 8 am and ending at 8:50 am.

Entry restrictions to Peace Memorial Park

  • As large crowds would normally gather in close proximity at the Peace Memorial Ceremony venue, we will be implementing temporary entry restrictions at Peace Memorial Park before, during, and after the ceremony, as we did in 2021 (invited guests and other participants listed above will not be subject to these restrictions); see (3) for details.

Other information

  • In order to prevent heatstroke, we will be further strengthening measures put in place in 2021, including increasing the number of misting fans, providing cold towels, and increasing the number of nurses on standby.
  • While we expect an increase in the number of people who will be able to participate this year as we have increased the scale of the Ceremony, we are still not at the point where anyone is free to participate. Thus, for those who will not be able to participate, we will be sharing a message from the Mayor of Hiroshima via Youtube<外部リンク>, during which he asks people around the world to pray for peace and participate in the ceremony in spirit, as well as to take action together united by the conviction that nuclear weapons should not exist.
