Regarding the 2021 Peace Memorial Ceremony (as of 5/14)

Article ID:0000225046 印刷ページ表示

In light of the fact that the Peace Memorial Ceremony has never once been cancelled since the Cenotaph for the A-Bomb Victims was built in Peace Memorial Park in 1952, the Peace Memorial Ceremony will be held this year in a similar manner as last year with strict COVID-19 infection prevention measures.

Ceremony Details

Scale

  • To maintain distance between people, chairs will be spaced 2 meters apart. As in 2020, this means that the maximum number of seats that can be placed on the lawn of Peace Memorial Park will be 880.

Participants

  • To allow for as many hibakusha and bereaved families as possible to attend with this year’s limited number of seats, we will NOT have general admission seats this year.
  • Please see here for a list of those who are currently invited to the ceremony. We will adjust numbers of those invited at a later date.
  • Please see here for a current list of those invited to the ceremony. We will adjust numbers of those invited at a later date. In the case that the UN Secretary General is unable to attend, we will instead request a video message.

Ceremony schedule

  • The ceremony is scheduled to proceed as it does each year, starting at 8 am and ending at 8:50 am. (Regarding the release of doves, which did not happen last year: we intend on releasing doves this year and are coordinating with service providers to that end.)

Entry restrictions to Peace Memorial Park

  • As large crowds would normally gather in close proximity around Peace Memorial Park to watch the ceremony, we are currently coordinating with related organizations to implement temporary entry restrictions at Peace Memorial Park before, during, and after the ceremony, as we did in 2020.

Other Information

  • We will closely monitor the situation regarding the spread of COVID-19 and review participants and the scale of the ceremony based on the circumstances.
  • To those who are unable to attend the ceremony due to the reduced scale and limited number of participants, we would like to share a message from the Mayor of Hiroshima via YouTube, during which he asks people around the world to participate in the ceremony in their hearts and hopes that the wishes for peace from people around the world will become united as one. The message can be viewed here<外部リンク>.
