When There Is a Death? To Non-Japanese Residents

Death Notification

Within 7 days of the day you are informed of the death

In the following order of priority:

  1. Relative
  2. Person living with the deceased
  3. Landlord,  landowner, or person responsible for managing the residence or land of the deceased

Death Notification form *Note 1

Death Certificate or Postmortem Certificate

Application for Cremation Permission *Note 2

Residence Card or Special Permanent Resident Certificate

National Health Insurance Card (If you have one) *Note 3

Atomic Bomb Survivor’s Certificate (if you have one) *Note 3

Citizens Affairs Division in the Ward Office of the area where the death took place or the applicant lives

*Note 1: Death Notification forms are available at the Citizens Affairs Division in Ward Offices and Branch Offices.

*Note 2: Please file an Application for Cremation Permission, and submit a Death Notification.

*Note 3: If the deceased was enrolled in National Health Insurance or possessed an Atomic Bomb Survivor’s Certificate, a funeral allowance is paid. The procedures for receiving the allowance can only be taken on days when municipal offices are open. For relevant offices and required documentation, please see the “In the Case of Death” page listed under related information.
