Hiroshima City-Sponsored Health Check-ups refer to specific health check-ups and screenings for late-stage senior citizens.
1.About theGenki Ja Kenshin*
Early Detection, Early Treatment, and Preventing Lifestyle Diseases
*Genki Ja Kenshin refer to Hiroshima City-Sponsored Health Check-ups
- There are no copay fees required for Genki Ja Kenshin.
- As of April 1, 2016, Genki Ja Kenshin now include uric acid tests and anemia tests.
When going for your check-up, please be sure to bring the examination voucher issued to you from the Health Center of your local ward, and your Health Insurance Card with you.
Don’t forget to check the information written on the examination voucher before your check-up.
1) Specific health check-ups and specific health guidance under Hiroshima City National Health Insurance
Specific Health Check-ups
This health check-up is designed to help prevent metabolic syndrome* (specific health guidance, detailed below, may be necessary depending on the results of this check-up).
Those who are under the Hiroshima City National Health Insurance plan and will be 40 or older this fiscal year are eligible for this check-up. However, this does not apply to those whom the Ministry of Labor, Health, and Welfare have deemed otherwise.
Examinations Under This Check-up
Height and weight, abdominal circumference, blood pressure, blood test (blood fat levels, liver function, blood sugar, kidney function, uric acid, anemia), urine test.
Cardiac electrograms and funduscopic exams will be held if deemed necessary.
*Metabolic syndrome: those who have visceral fat accumulation (fatty deposits on their organs) and two or more of the following: high blood sugar, lipid abnormalities, or high blood pressure. Those with this condition are at high risks for lifestyle diseases such as hardening of the arteries or arterial sclerosis (which can lead to heart disease and strokes) and diabetes.
Specific Health Guidance
According to the results of the Genki Ja Kenshin, patients will be categorized into one of three different ranks and be given specific health guidance accordingly.
Proactive Support
A 3-month continuous support program. Patients will speak one-on-one with specialists (doctors, public health nurses, registered dieticians) at specific health guidance facilities (hospitals and similar facilities), and choose achievable goals (changes to eating habits, exercise, etc) which will help improve their health check-up results. They will receive the support they need to help them continue to meet these goals and practice good healthy habits.
Motivational Support
A one-time visit to help facilitate healthier lifestyle habits. A specialist from the Health Center in the ward where the patient lives will visit their home and look at their current lifestyle habits, as well as set concrete goals for how they can improve them (changes to eating habits, exercise, etc). Patients will also receive the support necessary to make these changes.
Informative Support
Patients will receive information about how to keep visceral fat down. Information will be sent with the results of the health check-up or other occasions as a way to spread awareness about healthy lifestyle habits.
2) Health check-up for medically insured senior citizens 75 and above
This health check-up is designed for early detection and early treatment of lifestyle diseases.
Those eligible must be one of the following (excluding those which the Hiroshima Prefecture Association of Medical Care Services for Older Senior Citizens has deemed otherwise):
- 75 years of age or older; insured under the Late-Stage Elderly Medical Insurance System
- Between the ages of 65 and 74 with a recognized disability insured under the Late-Stage Elderly Medical Insurance System
Examinations Under This Check-up

3) Health Check-ups for those who do not fall under categories 1 or 2
Those who do not fall under categories 1 or 2, and are covered by medical insurance such as the Japan Health Insurance Association (office workers, their partners, etc): health check-ups will be conducted by the medical insurers listed on your insurance card. Please contact your medical insurer directly for more details.
2) Cancer Screenings Early Detection, Early Treatment
Screenings for stomach cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, cervical cancer, and breast cancer are available.
When going for your check-up, please be sure to bring the examination voucher issued to you from the Health Center of your local ward.

Registering for screenings (for those who would like to be sent vouchers for cancer screenings)
Citizens who do not have the chance to undergo cancer screenings at their place of employment and would like to be under the Hiroshima City Cancer Screening system must register beforehand. Upon registration, you will be sent a cancer screening voucher. For more information on how to register, please contact the Health Center of your local ward.
Those who fall under the following categories do not need to register in advance (vouchers will be sent to you automatically):
- Those insured under the National Health Insurance System
- Category I insured person in National Pension
- Citizens 60 and over
1) Stomach Cancer Screenings
Included screenings and those eligible:
- a) Stomach x-ray using contrast radiography (citizens 40 and over, once per fiscal year)
- b) Gastroscopy (citizens 50 and over, once every two fiscal years)
(Note: citizens in their 40s are eligible for (a) only; citizens 50 or older can choose either (a) or (b).)

- Those with the Atomic Bomb Survivor’s Certificate or Class 1 Health Check Recipient Certificate
- Those who can receive screenings at their place of employment
2) Lung Cancer Screenings
Citizens who will be 40 years old or older at the end of the fiscal year are eligible for this screening.
This screening consists of a chest x-ray (if necessary, a sputum test will also be conducted).
3) Colon Cancer Screenings (eligibility is the same as the lung cancer screenings)
This screening consists of a stool examination (to test for blood in stools).
4) Cervical Cancer Screenings
Women 20 years old or older are eligible for this screening.
*Except for the following:
- Those with the Atomic Bomb Survivor’s Certificate or Class 1 Health Check Recipient Certificate
- Those who can receive screenings at their place of employment
Screenings can be taken once every two fiscal years.
This screening consists of a pap test. If it is deemed necessary by a doctor to perform a cytodiagnosis of the uterine body, it will be performed only with patient consent (cannot be performed during group screenings or in-facility screenings).
5) Breast Cancer Screenings
Women who will be 40 years or older at the end of the fiscal year are eligible.
*Except for the following:
- Those with the Atomic Bomb Survivor’s Certificate or Class 1 Health Check Recipient Certificate
- Those who can receive screenings at their place of employment
Screenings available once every two fiscal years.
This screening consists of a mammography.
3) Cancer Screening Fees
A copayment will be necessary, except in the following cases:
- Those receiving livelihood protection
- Households exempt from paying residents tax
- Those aged 70 years or older
- Those with Insurance Cards for the Late-Stage Elderly Medical Insurance system
