Exhibit Facility for Atomic-Bombed Remnants opened on March 26、 2022

The Exhibit Facility for Atomic-Bombed Remnants displays artifacts and remnants in situ so that the visitors can touch upon the realities of the atomic bombing firsthand. Here, visitors to Peace Memorial Park can trace the history of this area from before the bombing to the present day. Many people once lived in this area, but their daily lives were destroyed instantly by a single atomic bomb. After the bombing, our predecessors worked tirelessly to turn this place into a park that symbolizes peace, and this town was reborn as a beautiful and peaceful place.

Primary methods used to ensure preservation of the remains

Together with a layout which blocks direct sunlight as much as possible, the building itself is highly insulated through the use of heat insulation sheets on the roof and outer walls and triple-glazed windows. In addition, to prevent external air from entering, positive pressure is maintained in both the exhibit space and the main hallway. The ceilings and inner walls of the exhibit space and main hallway also use materials that help control humidity.

As the carbonized flooring and tatami are prone to deterioration, we have placed a protective layer of soil over them and covered that layer with a replica of these items.

To prevent the surface of the artifacts from growing mold, they will be treated with 30 minutes of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) every night.

To evaluate the effects of environmental change on the artifacts, we have installed monitoring equipment and will be gathering data, such as humidity levels and similar. We will also perform regular evaluations about once per month to check for changes in artifact color, shape, mold growth, and plant growth.

Temporary closure for exhibit monitoring

We may limit the number of visitors to the exhibit when monitoring is being conducted for the preservation of the artifacts. Should any damages occur to the artifacts that must be taken care of quickly, we may change the facility hours or close completely without advance notice.

Requests to visitors

We ask for your understanding and cooperation with the following when visiting so that we can maintain the proper environment for artifact preservation (temperature, humidity levels, etc).

• Due to the nature of the facility, air conditioning cannot be used inside the building (especially in the exhibit space).
• Please do not leave the door open (we also ask that you refrain from conversation inside the facility to help prevent the spread of COVID-19).
• Please do not bring wet umbrellas into the building (please use the umbrella stand outside).
• Please do not bring food or drink into the building.
• Please do not bring hand sanitizing liquid into the building (please use hand sanitizer outside).
• As we cannot disinfect the inside of the building using water or alcohol-based solutions, we ask that you refrain from touching anything in the building as much as possible.
• Do not throw things into the artifact exhibit space (if you accidentally drop something, please alert a staff member).

Photography

Photography for personal use (commemorative photos, etc) is permitted without needing prior permission.

Other photography, such as photography for the purpose of print media or similar, will need prior permission; please consult with the Peace Promotion Division in advance.

Equipment that prevents visitors from viewing the exhibit or may have an effect on the internal environment (temperature, humidity levels, etc), such as tripods and lights, cannot be used during our hours of operation. We ask for your understanding in this matter.
