The City of Hiroshima has designated the 2nd, 12th, and 22nd of each month as Choose Public Transport Days to promote taking public transport instead of driving. The message of Choose Public Transport Day isn’t that cars are bad; rather, it is an initiative that seeks to promote taking action to help stop global warming by asking each citizen to re-think their car-dependent lifestyles, as well as to consider how they can use their cars in a more ecological manner and put these ideas into practice. Join us in incorporating eco-friendly transportation practices into your life!
But what are eco-friendly transportation practices? These practices include walking, riding a bicycle, or using public transport for things you would usually use your car for, and making use of carpooling when you have to use your car.
Take buses, trains, or bicycles instead of your car when possible.
Use the bus or trains when possible when commuting or shopping. Low-floor buses have slowly been introduced over the years, which means more buses that are easy to get on and get off.
It might not be just as convenient as a car, but you might find that public transport is more convenient than you thought!
With concerns over things like health and energy conservation on the rise, people are starting to look to bicycles once again. With gradual maintenance to bicycle riding areas and green spaces along riversides, bicycles, in addition to walking, are a great mode of transport for both the environment and your health!
When you use your car, try carpooling with others headed in the same direction. If everyone works together, you’ll find you can reduce your total car use.
If you avoid rush hour on your commute, not only will you have a shorter commute, you’ll help shorten the commute of others. Waking up earlier will give you more time in the morning, helping to make your day-to-day life a little more relaxed.
Morning commute always leave you stuck in gridlock? Try using Park and Ride services! Take your car to a train or bus station before you hit traffic and commute using public transport to make your commute easier – it’s also easier on the environment!
*Park and Ride: taking your car to your nearest train or bus station and parking in a nearby parking lot before riding public transport to your place of employment.
On the Hiroshima Urban Area Park and Ride Promotion Committee website, you can find registered Park and Rides near Astramline, JR, Hiroden Miyajima, and certain bus stations and stops. You can also search for Park and Rides close to your nearest station! (Information in Japanese).
