Donation from the Hawaii for Hiroshima Fundraising Committee
In the early morning hours of August 20, 2014, the northern part of Hiroshima City was devestated by landslides brought on by torrential downpours that continued from the previous night.
Hearing the news of the devestation, citizen groups in Honolulu quickly formed the Hawaii for Hiroshima Fundraising Committee on August 21 and began fundraising efforts.
Funds collected from organizations, businesses, and individuals throughout Hawaii yielded 2.4 million yen (USD 21,000) and were sent to our city at the end of November.
2014 was the 55th anniversary of sister city relations between our cities and we are especially grateful to the people of Hawaii for sharing the Aloha Spirit with us through their thoughtful donation.
Chairpersons for the Hawaii for Hiroshima Fundraising Committee:
- Mr. Wayne Miyao, Chairman of the Hiroshima-Hawaii Sister State Committee
- Mr. Wayne Ishihara, President of the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce
- Mr. Robert Nagao, President of the Honolulu Hiroshima Kenjin Kai
- Ms. Carole Hayashino, President and Executive of the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii
