As we saw a rapid increase in patients from the end of 2020 to the beginning of 2021, the City of Hiroshima worked together with the prefectural government to implement a period of intensive infection prevention measures. As a result of those who worked hard on the front lines of medical care and at testing facilities during that period of crisis, business owners who understood the importance of infection prevention measures and worked with us to carry out those measures, and our citizens who gave us their complete understanding and cooperation during the intensive infection prevention period, currently, the spread of COVID-19 has started to slow and new patient numbers are under control.

I would like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

March and April bring with them much change, and I expect that there will be many people moving to our city for work or for school. Thus, I ask that each and every one of you remember that COVID-19 is a highly contagious virus that anyone is capable of catching. As we still have a long way to go before the pandemic ends, I ask that you all continue to uphold practices that will stop the spread of infection at least until everyone is vaccinated. Specifically, strictly avoid unnecessary travel to areas with high levels of infections and avoid using facilities where there is a high risk of infection.

These practices will not only help you to protect your health but will also help to protect the health of all of our citizens. The issue at hand now is whether our citizens can carry out these practices in the spirit of solidarity.

I ask for your continued cooperation to put an end to COVID-19.

MATSUI Kazumi
