Letter of Protest
It has come to light that your country executed a subcritical nuclear test at the Nevada Test Site on May 14.
At the G7 Hiroshima Summit last May the United States and other G7 leaders issued the Hiroshima Vision on Nuclear Disarmament, expressing their commitment to achieving a world without nuclear weapons. The execution of the above test clearly runs counter to this message. Such a conduct is totally unacceptable as it betrays the wishes of the hibakusha who have been appealing that "no one else should suffer as we have," and millions of others who seek the abolition of nuclear weapons. On behalf of the atomic-bombed city of Hiroshima, I vehemently protest and demand that all future nuclear tests be cancelled.
I strongly urge the United States to reflect deeply on the horrific realities of what a single atomic bomb did to Hiroshima and the tragic experiences of the hibakusha. Share in the Spirit of Hiroshima, the will for peace, and lead the international community's initiatives for nuclear disarmament, as well as make reasonable efforts for a truly peaceful world free of nuclear weapons.
MATSUI Kazumi
Mayor
The City of Hiroshima
