Product name Miyajima Osuna Pottery
Product description
Rare traditional craftwork born of the sacred sands of Miyajima, a World Heritage site
Our kiln was built across the shore of Miyajima on Miyajima-guchi 112 years ago. In our long history of tradition, we have been designated as the official kiln of the Itsukushima Shrine, using traditional techniques to create pottery made of clay mixed with the sacred sands that lie beneath the main shrine at Itsukushima. It is a reminder of traditional techniques and of the old custom of carrying the sacred sand as a token of good luck which dates back to the Edo period. Of our products, our momiji-mon pattern stands out with its beauty and dynamism, using real maple leaves to create delicate patterns down to the veins on the leaves. Our pieces fully express the timeless beauty of ancient Miyajima, and are popular in Hiroshima, across Japan, and around the world.
