Hijiyama Military Cemetery

Hijiyama Military Cemetery was established in 1872 by the national government as a burial ground for army troops. It is the final resting place for many Japanese soldiers spanning from the Satsuma Rebellion to World War II.

When it was first established, it was located where the Radiation Effects Research Facility (RERF) is currently. During cemetery consolidation in 1944, a large portion of the cemetery was consolidated through measures like relocation. However, the grounds received considerable damage in the 1945 atomic bombing. Prior to the construction of the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC, the predecessor to the RERF), the cemetery needed to be relocated, and in 1949, the remains were moved and reburied at a monument to those who died in battle located in Hijiyama Park. With the hard work of many over the years, the cemetery was rebuilt to become what it is today, and in 1960, the remains were moved from the monument and reburied here.

Today, a great number of remains are buried together under approximately 3,500 gravestones. There are also a large number of cenotaphs located in the south of the cemetery. In addition, the cemetery is also the final resting place for soldiers from China, France, and Germany who died in Hiroshima during wars, including the First Sino-Japanese War and World War I.
