In light of the fact that German POWs held on Ninoshima during WWI were the first people to introduce baumkuchen to Japan, and that it was the 100-year anniversary of the very first international goodwill soccer game held between a team of German POWs and students from Hiroshima, we held our Hannover Day 2019 celebration at the Ninoshima Community Hall and surrounding area, as well as other German cultural events, on June 2, 2019.

In addition to our annual Hannover Day events, such as German cuisine (German bread, sausages, and baumkuchen), tea ceremony, lüttje lage (Hannover tradition of drinking beer and schnapps together), exhibition and readings from German picture books, and a Hannover train paper craft event, this year we also added performances by a choir and a principal cellist from the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra, a soccer lesson by members of Hiroshima San Frecce, a make-your-own baumkuchen event, history of Ninoshima lecture, traditional Ninoshima cuisine (steamed rice with octopus), and many other great events.
