Takamori-e Lacquerware

Takamori-e Lacquerware

World-renowned lacquer art

Takamori-e is created with unique techniques not often found in the world of Japanese lacquer art. This over 170 year old technique uses lacquerware or unpainted wood as a base; artisans layer lacquer to create 3D designs of flowers, bugs, and more, and then add colored lacquer to bring the detailed designs to life. The glossy lacquer is not only colorful, but also embellished with gold and silver for a stunning shine. One of the distinct characteristics of this lacquerware is how it portrays the softness of a painting and the hardiness of a sculpture all at the same time. Takamori-e techniques are passed down to one successor per generation: the works of the current Ikkokusai (7th generation) are brilliant representations of seasonal Japanese aesthetics, using styles which have been inherited from the very first generation of artisans. These craftworks are the pride of Hiroshima, representing our cultural legacy both at home and abroad.

Miyajima Rokuro Zaiku (Wooden Lathe Crafts)

Miyajima Rokuro Zaiku (Wooden Lathe Crafts)

Better with age: enjoy the natural progression and beauty of Japanese woodgrain

It is said that the tradition of Miyajima rokuro zaiku came to the island in the mid-1800s. Instead of using lacquer to create brightly colored pieces, this traditional craftwork features the natural beauty of wood. We use traditional techniques to create a wide variety of pieces: the process begins with carefully choosing wood materials, and then shaping and naturally drying them before using a lathe to carve them. The beautiful woodgrain takes center stage in our pieces. Each piece features the gentle curves and warmth that only handcrafted woodwork can provide. With each use, the pieces darken in color, becoming more refined. Enjoy the natural progression of each piece as it becomes a permanent part of your home.

Miyajima Osuna Pottery

Miyajima Osuna Pottery

Rare traditional craftwork born of the sacred sands of Miyajima, a World Heritage site

Our kiln was built across the shore of Miyajima on Miyajima-guchi 108 years ago. In our long history of tradition, we have been designated as the official kiln of the Itsukushima Shrine, using traditional techniques to create pottery made of clay mixed with the sacred sands that lie beneath the main shrine at Itsukushima. It is a reminder of traditional techniques and of the old custom of carrying the sacred sand as a token of good luck which dates back to the Edo period. Of our products, our momiji-mon pattern stands out with its beauty and dynamism, using real maple leaves to create delicate patterns down to the veins on the leaves. Our pieces fully express the timeless beauty of ancient Miyajima, and are popular in Hiroshima, across Japan, and around the world.

HIROSHIMA NEEDLE HARISHIGOTO

Hiroshima Needles: High-quality needles born from 300 years of tradition

Hiroshima is proud to be the largest producer of hand-sewing needles and marking pins in Japan, known as Hiroshima Needles. Their history dates back over 300 years when the Lord Asano (who ruled the region) introduced needlework as a way for low-ranking samurai to support themselves. Ever since, with the introduction of improvements to quality and more efficient means of production, Hiroshima Needles have become known as a distinct local industry. Tulip has inherited those traditional techniques to create needles with easy-to-thread eyes, a smooth body that doesn’t bend easily, and a point which moves through fabric smoothly.

Hiroshima Carp Streamers

Hiroshima Carp Streamers

Traditional hand-painted carp streamers: carrying over 400 years of history to the present

Long ago, Japanese washi papermaking flourished along the Ozegawa River that flows along the border of Hiroshima Prefecture and Yamaguchi Prefecture, and our Hiroshima carp streamers carry on the tradition of hand-painted streamers made with washi paper. Each one of our streamers is made completely by hand using washi paper made by Hiroshima’s only washi maker, Ōtake Tesuki Washi no Sato. The warmth of washi paper, combined with the charming painting of Japanese folktale hero Kintarō and bright and lively colors put our hand-painted streamers in a league of their own as one of the last remaining handmade streamers in all of Japan. Enjoy all of the culture and artistry that goes into each of our streamers.
