This year, the students experienced creative drama lessons exploring the book and the themes of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, a story about a young Japanese girl who builds paper cranes as she tries to survive the effects of Hiroshima. It is an inspiring and beautiful story exploring hope, peace and love. The students from each campus built 1 papier mache and fabric crane, as well as dozens of smaller paper cranes. They then marched in The Grand Procession as part of First Night Austin with their cranes on December 31, 2007年 After having been displayed in City Hall and seen marching down Congress Ave. We now send these cranes as a sign of hope and peace to the Hiroshima Peace Crane Memorial. |

I enjoyed making paper cranes, it was really fun. Know since we made the cranes I am really into making origami. I hope the people in Hiroshima really enjoy the cranes that we are sending and that it will be a symbol of peace to them. When I was making a gold paper crane I remembered the story and how the gold crane gave Sadako strength while she was sick with lukemia. |

When I found out my language, the culture and just the everyday lifestyle. When I found out my language Arts teacher was taking a trip to there, I was completley jealous and couldn't wait to hear all about it. Of course, she brought us the past of one of the deadly disasters in Japan. The bombing of Hiroshima. I was fascinated and deeply touched to see how much effort that she put into the presentations on the subject. And so, with my love of Japan, I was just completley blown away. I will say, out of all the possible ways we could've handled that situation, I do not believe bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki was the right way. No one, no matter the circumstances, ever deserved that. I truly believe that. |
