Comment from the Mayor Regarding the 2020 US Presidential Election Result

I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Joe Biden, who has been declared the winner of the 2020 US presidential election.

Mr. Biden has previously stated that: “I will work to bring us closer to a world without nuclear weapons, so that the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are never repeated." I hope that he will take firm action to overcome the tense international situation surrounding nuclear weapons, shift from division among states to cooperation based on mutual trust, and ultimately help realize the abolition of nuclear weapons which is the ardent wish of the hibakusha.

The City of Hiroshima, together with the City of Nagasaki, will call on the president-elect to visit our cities to understand the reality of the atomic bombings as the second incumbent US president to do so following President Obama.
