Pension Payments

There are three types of pension payments: 1) Basic Pension for the Elderly: paid to people aged 65 and older who have been enrolled in a public pension for at least 10 years; 2) Basic Pension for the Disabled: paid to people who become sick or injured if the sickness or injury is specified by the terms of the pension; 3) Basic Pension for the Bereaved: if a person on the National Pension dies, this is paid either to their spouse (if the spouse was their dependent and is now taking care of a child or children) or to the deceased’s dependent child or children.
To be entitled to the Basic Pension for the Disabled or the Basic Pension for the Bereaved, you need to fulfill certain payment-related criteria.
For inquires, contact the National Insurance and Pension Division at your local ward or branch office . Note: the Ninoshima Branch Office does not deal with pensions.
Non-Japanese residents who have paid pension insurance premiums for six months or longer but cannot receive the basic pension may be allowed to apply for a lump-sum withdrawal payment after leaving Japan.
