2020 National Census Information

The Japanese government will be holding a national census for all residents in Japan as of October 1, 2020. The national census takes place once every five years and is the most important and comprehensive statistical survey in Japan. International residents who have been living in Japan, or plan to live in Japan, for three months or longer as of October 1 are legally obligated to respond to this census, so please do your part and help us out! All information gained from the census will not be used for any other purposes.

Beginning September 14, census officials will begin delivering census paperwork to every home across the country. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the census official will speak with you through your door intercom and leave the documents in your mailbox. All census officials will be carrying official ID cards (調査員証//chōsa-in shō). Please note that there are no charges or fees associated with the national census; census officials will NEVER ask for your bank account or credit card information.
