Municipal School Closings in Hiroshima City (as of 4/10/2020)

All municipal elementary, junior high, and high schools, as well as children’s community centers, etc, will be closed to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The Hiroshima Municipal Secondary School, municipal kindergartens, elementary schools, junior high schools, and special needs school will be closed from April 15 (Wed) to May 6 (Wed), 2020. There will be no school lunches.

Please note that the special needs school will be closed beginning April 16 (Thurs), 2020.

What To Do During School Closings

During school closings, students will be expected stay home, with the exception of going to school once per week from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm (as a general rule). While at home, set a schedule for the day (meal times, time to do homework or study). Parents/guardians can also request that teachers visit their home.
Special Exceptions

For parents/guardians who can’t take off from work with small children who need supervision:

  • The kindergarten will be open from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. We will take the appropriate measures to ensure your child’s health.
  • First to third year elementary school students enrolled in the After-school Kids’ Club can go to school in the mornings. After eating lunch (to be brought from home), they can spend the afternoon at the After-school Kids’ Club. We will take the appropriate measures to ensure your child’s health.
  • Students in special needs classes or the special needs school who can’t use social welfare services can still go to school. We will take the appropriate measures to ensure your child’s health (please note that lunch will not be provided).

Children’s Community Centers

Closed from March 2 (Mon), 2020.

Nursery Schools

Will remain open (subject to change depending on the rate of infection in Hiroshima or if teachers/students become infected).

A Word to Parents/Guardians and Kids

The following is a list of guidelines for your safety.

  • Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly (at least 20 seconds with soap and water) and use proper coughing etiquette.
  • Wear a mask when outside.
  • Take your temperature at home and be aware of your health. Be sure to take your kids’ temperature before they go to school.
  • If your kid has a fever of 37.5C or above, or has cold-like symptoms (sore throat, cough, fever), keep them at home.
  • Get enough sleep and remember to get some exercise. Eat a balanced and healthy diet.
  • Kids, help your parents out with the housework.

Help stop the spread of COVID-19 by frequently washing your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, maintaining proper coughing etiquette, and avoiding the 3Cs (closed spaces, crowded places, close-contact settings).
