Announcement from the Immigration Services Agency Regarding Residence Cards

To prevent crowding at immigration offices and the spread of COVID-19, we have created special rules and regulations about submitting paperwork at immigration offices for Residence Card renewals and births in Japan.

Residence Card Extensions/Renewals

As a rule, if you would like to apply to extend/renew your Residence Cards (stay in Japan past the date of the period of stay on their card), you must submit the necessary paperwork to your local immigration office before the end of your period of stay.

Under the special rule, if your period of stay ends from March 1 to June 30, 2020, you can submit paperwork to extend your stay at your local immigration office up to three months after your period of stay ends.

Births in Japan

As a rule, if you have a baby in Japan who is a) not of Japanese citizenship and b) will be in Japan for longer than 60 days, you must submit the appropriate paperwork to the immigration office within 30 days of the birth of your baby and receive a Residence Card for the baby within 60 days.

Under the special rule, for babies born between January 31 and June 30, 2020, you can submit paperwork up to three months after the 61st day the baby was born.

Date of Birth ------------ Day 61 -------------- Submit paperwork by this day
                                     (3 months after day 61)

Note: if you’re already in your Departure Preparation Period, the special rules do not apply to you. If you cannot return to your country due to COVID-19, please submit the appropriate paperwork at your local immigration office before end of your period of stay.

For more information on what you need to submit when applying to extend your period of stay or when you have a baby, please see the Ministry of Justice Guidebook on Living and Working<外部リンク>.

If you’re unsure about what to do, please contact your regional immigration office directly.
