Chapter 1 Total Abolition of Nuclear Weapons and Realization of Lasting World Peace

Section 1
Promoting Efforts to Achieve the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons by 2020 and Conveying the A-bomb Experience to Future Generations

1 Promoting efforts to achieve the abolition of nuclear weapons by 2020
To realize a nuclear-weapon-free world by 2020, we will strengthen activities led by Mayors for Peace, appealing to the nuclear-weapon states and fostering public opinion favorable to nuclear abolition at home and abroad. We will also increase support for the peace activities of our citizens.
The 7th General Conference of Mayors for Peace (August 2009)
2 Conveying the A-bomb experience to future generations
While providing further support and opportunities for the A-bomb survivors to deliver their eyewitness testimony, we will collect and utilize A-bomb materials and mementos, and preserve and maintain peace memorial facilities, including the Atomic Bomb Dome. To help analyze and organize the A-bomb experience, we will promote the establishment of Hiroshima-Nagasaki Peace Study Courses and strengthen the Hiroshima Peace Institute in Hiroshima City University.

Section 2
Promoting Lasting World Peace

1 Addressing the many problems that threaten human survival
Utilizing the international recognition of “Hiroshima,” we will bring to bear established knowledge and knowhow in promoting studies of peace-related issues, facilitating communication, and developing international cooperation.

2 Raising peace consciousness
We will facilitate peace education, nurture the culture of peace and develop “Cycles of Peace” across borders and generations. Spreading the people’s desire for peace across national and ethnic borders, we will also convey that message down through the generations.
